The Walnut Ravenlong™ Historical Seax is a substantial Viking Age-inspired blade featuring an 18.3-inch 1040 carbon steel blade, natural walnut handle, and traditional brass fittings. With an overall length of approximately 23 inches and a distinctive broken-back profile, this handmade seax draws inspiration from historical Northern European blade forms.
Details
At approximately 23 inches overall, the Walnut Ravenlong™ is one of the larger seax designs in the Arham Cutlery collection.
Its substantial 18.3-inch blade is made from 1040 carbon steel and paired with a handcrafted natural walnut handle. Brass fittings complement the traditional appearance, while a hand-sewn leather scabbard provides storage for the blade.
Each piece is handmade, so slight variations in walnut grain, coloration, and individual finish are expected.
1040 Carbon Steel Blade
The blade is made from 1040 carbon steel and hardened to approximately 58–60 HRC.
Blade Length: 18.3 inches / 46.5 cm
Blade Width: 1.5 inches / 4 cm
Blade Material: 1040 Carbon Steel
Hardness: 58–60 HRC
Blade Profile: Broken Back Seax
Edge: Sharpened
The angular transition along the spine creates the distinctive broken-back profile found on a number of historical seax forms.
Historical Seax Design
The Walnut Ravenlong™ takes inspiration from the long single-edged blades associated with historical seax traditions.
Its extended blade, angular spine, natural wood handle, brass fittings, and leather scabbard combine to create a Historical Seax with strong Viking Age-inspired character.
Rather than presenting this piece as an exact archaeological reproduction, it is best described as a handmade interpretation influenced by historical seax designs.
Natural Walnut Handle
The handle is handcrafted from natural walnut wood and complemented by traditional brass fittings.
Handle Material: Walnut Wood
Fittings: Brass Caps & Accents
Handle Finish: Beeswax & Linseed Oil Blend
The wood finish helps protect the surface while highlighting the natural grain and coloration of the walnut.
Because walnut is a natural material, no two handles will have exactly identical grain patterns or tones.
Hand-Sewn Leather Scabbard
The Walnut Ravenlong™ includes a handmade, hand-sewn leather scabbard with brass detailing.
Before storing the seax, make sure the carbon steel blade is completely clean and dry. Avoid leaving a damp blade inside the leather scabbard for extended periods.
Care & Maintenance
1040 carbon steel requires routine maintenance to help protect it against corrosion.
After handling or use, clean and thoroughly dry the blade. Apply a thin coating of suitable knife-safe oil periodically, especially before extended storage.
Keep the seax in a dry environment and avoid prolonged exposure to moisture.
