The Ravenback Longcrest™ Long Seax combines an extended broken-back blade profile with natural walnut, brass accents, and traditional handmade character. Its substantial proportions create the distinctive appearance associated with longer historical seax designs while keeping the construction straightforward and material-focused.

With an overall length of approximately 23 inches and an 18.3-inch blade, this is one of the larger seax designs in the Arham Cutlery range. The blade is made from 1040 high carbon steel and specified at 58–60 HRC.

Details

The Ravenback Longcrest™ is built around the proportions of a Long Seax, with a broken-back blade profile that creates a pronounced angular transition toward the point.

Its 18.3-inch blade is paired with a walnut handle, brass accents, and double-bolster construction. Jimping along the spine adds another distinctive detail to the blade.

A hand-sewn leather scabbard is included for storage and protection.

If you prefer a shorter natural-handle design, compare it with the Hornveil Norsecrest™ Seax Knife, which uses a 10-inch carbon steel blade and natural horn handle.

Blade

The blade is made from 1040 high carbon steel and has a specified hardness of approximately 58–60 HRC.

Its broken-back profile is defined by the angular change in the spine toward the point. This gives the blade a noticeably different silhouette from straight-back seax designs.

The blade measures approximately 18.3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, making its extended proportions a defining feature of the design.

For another interpretation of the seax form with a walnut-and-bone handle, see the Oakenbone Ravenback™ Norse Seax.

Handle Specifications

The handle is made from natural walnut wood and finished with brass accents and double bolsters.

Walnut provides visible grain and natural color variation, so minor differences between individual pieces are normal.

The combination of dark walnut, brass fittings, and the extended carbon steel blade gives the Ravenback Longcrest™ a traditional, historically inspired appearance without relying on excessive decorative elements.

Leather Scabbard

A hand-sewn leather scabbard is included with the seax.

Before placing the blade into leather, make sure the steel is clean and completely dry. Leather can retain moisture, which is particularly important to consider with carbon steel.

For extended storage, periodically inspect the blade rather than leaving it unchecked inside the scabbard for long periods.

Care & Use

Carbon steel requires regular care to help prevent oxidation.

After handling or use, clean the blade and dry it thoroughly. Apply a thin coating of suitable knife-safe oil when needed, particularly before longer storage periods.

Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture and never store the blade wet inside its leather scabbard.

The walnut handle should also be kept away from prolonged soaking and harsh cleaning chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Long Seax?

A Long Seax is a larger form of seax distinguished by its extended blade and overall proportions. Historical seaxes existed in different sizes and profiles, so the term primarily helps distinguish longer examples from more compact seax forms.

How long were seaxes?

Historical seaxes varied considerably in size. Archaeological examples include relatively compact blades as well as much longer forms. The Ravenback Longcrest™ has an 18.3-inch blade and an overall length of approximately 23 inches.

What is a Norse seax?

The term Norse seax is commonly used today for seax designs associated with or inspired by Northern European and Viking Age blade traditions. Historical seaxes varied by region, period, size, and blade profile rather than following one universal design.

What makes the Ravenback Longcrest™ different from a straight-back seax?

Its defining feature is the broken-back blade profile. The spine changes angle toward the point, producing a more angular silhouette than the comparatively continuous spine of a straight-back design.

Does the carbon steel blade require maintenance?

Yes. Keep the blade clean and dry and apply a thin protective coating of suitable knife-safe oil when needed. Proper care is especially important before longer storage periods.
