The Spikeforge Ironback™ Railroad Spike Seax stands apart from conventional wood or bone-handled seax designs because it is forged from a single railroad spike. The same piece of steel forms the 7.4-inch blade, twisted handle, and integrated steel finger guard, creating a distinctive all-steel construction.
With a broken-back blade profile and approximately 16.1-inch overall length, the Spikeforge Ironback™ combines traditional seax-inspired geometry with an unusual forged-steel design.
Details
The Spikeforge Ironback™ is formed from a single railroad spike rather than combining a separate wooden handle with the blade.
Its 7.4-inch blade is made from 1040 carbon steel and specified at approximately 58–60 HRC. The blade measures approximately 1.1 inches wide and features a broken-back profile with a sharpened edge.
Behind the blade, the steel continues into an integrated finger guard and twisted handle.
For another broken-back design with more traditional natural handle materials, explore the Walnut Ravenlong™ Historical Seax.
Forged from a Single Railroad Spike
The defining feature of the Spikeforge Ironback™ is its one-piece railroad spike construction.
Instead of attaching walnut, bone, or horn scales to create the grip, the original steel continues through the entire design. The rear section is twisted to create the distinctive handle appearance, while the finger guard is formed from the same material.
This construction gives the Railroad Spike Seax a noticeably different character from the other historically inspired seax designs in the Arham Cutlery collection.
Blade
The blade measures approximately 7.4 inches long and 1.1 inches wide.
It uses 1040 carbon steel with a specified hardness of approximately 58–60 HRC and comes with a sharpened edge.
Its broken-back profile creates an angular transition along the spine toward the point, visually connecting the design with traditional broken-back seax forms.
For a larger broken-back interpretation with a walnut handle, compare it with the Ravenback Longcrest™ Long Seax.
Twisted Steel Handle
The handle is formed directly from the steel of the railroad spike.
A twisted section creates its distinctive appearance, while the integrated steel finger guard is formed from the same material rather than being added as a separate wood or bone handle component.
Because this is an all-steel design, its appearance is intentionally different from seaxes using traditional natural handle materials.
Historically Inspired Profile
The Spikeforge Ironback™ combines modern railroad-spike construction with the recognizable angular geometry of a broken-back seax.
It should be considered a modern, historically inspired interpretation rather than an exact reproduction of a particular archaeological artifact. The railroad spike construction itself is the distinctive modern element of the design.
Leather Sheath
A hand-sewn leather sheath is included with the Spikeforge Ironback™.
Make sure the blade is clean and completely dry before placing it inside. Leather can retain moisture, so avoid leaving damp steel enclosed during storage.
Care & Use
1040 carbon steel requires routine maintenance to help protect its surface against oxidation. After handling or use, clean the steel when necessary and dry it thoroughly.
Remove fingerprints and moisture before applying a thin coating of suitable knife-safe oil. Because the handle is also steel, periodically inspect the complete exposed steel surface rather than caring only for the blade.
Never store the Railroad Spike Seax while wet, particularly inside its leather sheath.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Railroad Spike Seax?
A Railroad Spike Seax is a modern seax-inspired design forged using a railroad spike as its starting material. The Spikeforge Ironback™ uses a single spike to form the blade, twisted steel handle, and integrated finger guard.
Are railroad spike knives any good?
Quality depends on the steel, heat treatment, construction, and intended application rather than the railroad spike appearance alone. The Spikeforge Ironback™ is specified as 1040 carbon steel with a hardness of approximately 58–60 HRC.
Is the Spikeforge Ironback™ made from one railroad spike?
Yes. Its blade, twisted handle, and integrated steel finger guard are formed from a single railroad spike.
Is this an exact historical reproduction?
No. Its broken-back profile draws inspiration from historical seax geometry, while the railroad spike construction is a modern design element.
How should I care for the all-steel construction?
Keep the exposed steel clean and dry and periodically apply a thin protective coating of suitable knife-safe oil. Pay attention to the handle and guard as well as the blade because the design uses exposed steel throughout.
