The Walnutforge Ravencrest™ Carbon Steel Seax combines an 11-inch 1040 carbon steel blade with a natural walnut handle, brass accents, and a hand-sewn leather scabbard. Its approximately 16-inch overall length gives it substantial proportions while remaining considerably more compact than the longest seax designs in the Arham Cutlery collection.

Inspired by historical single-edged blade traditions, this Viking seax knife emphasizes natural materials, straightforward construction, and a distinctive seax profile.

Details

The Walnutforge Ravencrest™ features an 11-inch blade made from 1040 carbon steel and specified at approximately 58–60 HRC.

The walnut handle is finished with brass accents and a brass cap, creating warm contrast against the steel blade. A sharpened edge and hand-sewn leather scabbard complete the design.

For a different natural-handle combination, explore the Oakenbone Ravenback™ Norse Seax, which pairs walnut and bone with a longer 14.5-inch carbon steel blade.

Blade

The blade measures approximately 11 inches long and 1.25 inches wide.

1040 carbon steel gives the Walnutforge Ravencrest™ the traditional material character expected from a Carbon Steel Seax, but it also means the blade requires regular maintenance to help protect its surface from oxidation.

The blade comes sharpened and has a specified hardness of approximately 58–60 HRC.

Walnut Handle

Natural walnut gives the handle visible grain and tonal variation. Individual pieces can differ slightly in color, grain pattern, and markings because wood is a natural material.

Brass accents and the brass end cap provide visual contrast while maintaining the understated appearance of the design.

For a different wood-handle interpretation, see the Olivecrest Straightback™ Straight Back Seax, which uses natural olive wood instead of walnut.

Historical Seax Inspiration

The seax appeared in different forms among Germanic peoples over a broad historical period. Archaeological examples associated with the Migration Period and later centuries demonstrate that there was no single universal seax shape or size.

Seaxes also continued to appear in Northern European contexts during the Viking Age. Modern terms such as Viking seax knife are therefore useful for describing historically inspired designs, but surviving examples show considerable variation in blade length, profile, and construction.

The Walnutforge Ravencrest™ draws inspiration from this broader historical tradition rather than claiming to reproduce one specific archaeological artifact.

Leather Scabbard

A hand-sewn leather scabbard is included with the Walnutforge Ravencrest™.

Before placing the blade inside, make sure the carbon steel is clean and completely dry. Leather can retain moisture, so a wet or damp blade should not be left inside the scabbard.

During extended storage, periodically inspect the blade and renew its thin protective coating of suitable knife-safe oil when necessary.

Care & Use

Carbon steel requires regular maintenance.

After handling or use, clean the blade when necessary and dry it completely. Remove fingerprints and moisture before applying a thin coating of suitable knife-safe oil. Avoid prolonged exposure to damp conditions and never store the blade wet inside its leather scabbard.

The walnut handle should also be kept away from prolonged soaking, excessive heat, and harsh household cleaning chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What defines a seax knife?

A seax is a family of single-edged blades historically associated with Germanic peoples. Surviving examples vary considerably in blade length, width, profile, and construction, so there is no single shape that defines every seax.

Were seaxes used during the Viking Age?

Yes. Seaxes are represented in Northern European historical and archaeological contexts associated with the Viking Age, although their history extends beyond that period and they were not exclusive to one group.

What should you avoid cutting with carbon steel?

Avoid using a carbon steel blade on materials that can damage or unnecessarily dull the edge, such as stone, glass, metal, and other very hard surfaces. After contact with moisture or acidic foods, clean and dry the blade promptly.

Does the Walnutforge Ravencrest™ require regular blade care?

Yes. Its 1040 carbon steel blade should be kept clean and dry. Applying a thin coating of suitable knife-safe oil when necessary can help protect the steel during storage.

Does this Viking seax knife include a scabbard?

Yes. The Walnutforge Ravencrest™ Viking seax knife includes a hand-sewn leather scabbard. Always make sure the carbon steel blade is dry before placing it inside.
